Here are three examples of a class lesson sheet designed by Manny:

Hinge and Hold

Ever find your ball in the deep rough around the green? Forget about chipping. Too much grass will get between the clubface and the ball. So we need something steeper. How about learning a simple pitch called the "Hinge and Hold?" Below is a three-step guide to learning this technique. Have fun!

(To hit this shot, use only a lob or sand wedge).

Address the ball with a narrow open stance. Your weight should be toward your target and your hands should be ahead of the ball. The ball can be placed back, centered, or forward depending on how high you want the ball to come out.

Your Notes

On the backswing, hinge up the club abruptly by cocking your wrist. Take the club back until you have formed the letter "L" with your left arm and the shaft. This will allow you to produce a steep angle of approach to the ball.

On the forward swing continue "holding" your hinge and execute a vertical down-and-through shot. After impact, do not let the right hand pass the left or the toe of the club pass the heel.

Have you tried a BLT yet? No, not a bacon lettuce and tomato sandwich, but a chipping technique that is so helpful around the greens. BLT is an acronym that helps you to remember how to setup for a “Y” back and through chip as you can see in the first picture. This is a lever one swing and there is little wrist movement. Simply form a “Y” at address, take the “Y” back and then through for a crisp chip. Then watch the ball roll down by the hole. Practice this shot and watch your scores drop like mad. Have fun!
